What could be worse? Hahahah. A child screaming, tantrum, falling over themselves, arguing, etc. :-)

Yes Colin, distraction automatically attracts the criminal to you as it makes you an easy target. Head down, talking on the mobile, hands full; what could be worse? You need all your senses on the street nowadays.

Good advice! The problem for parents is the sheer amount of distraction that we've got to put up with. Parents shouldn't be afraid to ask for help or for an escort to walk to the car. There's definitely safety in numbers. Regards, Colin

Very good points made. My #1 is kind of obvious--always check the back seat. It is amazing how many people do not do this. Keeping the keys in the hand is important--you can get into your car quicker and use them as weapons as well. Never, ever go to a secondary location, your chances are not good. Attack without mercy if this situation arises.

big pumpkin - I'd like to think that parents would be the prime targets (and thus would be 'attacked' more frequently by) snatch thefts. Such opportunistic crime mostly decreases the overall risk to the victim. I say this because it is not the intent of the person to harm the victim, only take what they want and leave quickly. But the risk of injury is still there. However, this is not always the case. There will always be the risk of some psycho who wants more than the handbag or the car - and this needs to be guarded against. I read a book that said if parents are with a child, it is an option to drag the child down to the ground and adopt a defensible position there. This allows you to use your legs and cover yourselves as opposed to being exposed to punches, hair grabs, falling, etc.

Just a small safety tip - always lock your door when you get in the car.

Excellent tip, Bill!

Just fyi, Bill is a black belt instructor and has some good martial arts and self defence experience in his own right.

I just got this from a friend of mine. I'm not sure if it is a hoax. But the key message is one of awareness ... Look, Lock, Leave.

> Subject: Fwd: IMPORTANT MSG FROM THE WA POLICE
>
>
>
>
> Guys please pass this along to all the women you know.....
>
> This actually happened a few weeks ago right here in Perth. It was early
> evening and a young lady stopped to get petrol. She filled her tank and
> walked into the store to pay for her petrol. The cashier told her 'Don't
> pay
> for your petrol yet.....walk around the store for a while and act as if
> you're picking up some other things to buy. A man just got into the back
> of
> your car. I've called the police and they're on their way'.
>
> When the police arrived, they found the man in the back seat of the girl's
> car and asked him what he was doing. He replied, he was joining a gang and
> the initiation to join is to kidnap a woman and bring her back to the gang
> to be raped by every member of the gang. If the woman was still alive by
> the
> time they finish with her then they let her go.
>
> According to the police that night, there is a new gang forming here
> originating from Melbourne. The scary part of this is because the guy
> didn't
> have a weapon on him. The police could only charge him with
> trespassing....
> He's back on the street and free to try again.
>
> Please be aware of what's going on around you and for your family and
> friends. LADIES you or one of your family and friends could be the next
> victim.
>
> Please forward this on to everyone you know. Please do not discard this
> message it is very important that everyone knows what is happening.
> Please be careful when leaving your vehicle and make sure it is ALWAYS
> Locked to prevent this from happening to you.

My name's Bill and I'm a student of Colin's from over in the East of Australia.

Just a small safety tip - always lock your door when you get in the car. Why? To prevent people from jumping you in carparks, at traffic lights, etc.

A lot of people leave it unlocked because they think "If I lock it, and an accident occurs, I might not be able to unlock."

The truth is, if the accident is that bad, they will have to cut you out anyway.

This is so true. And here lately, Mommies and Babies have become the targets of thugs. Because it is EASY!!! A friend of mine (9 months pregnant, mind you!) got pushed into the drain whilst she was strapping her 3 yr old daughter into the car seat. She had nothing to offer them but the car keys and decided against it since daughter was already strapped in. They had a knife on daughter's throat too. All real life. Freaky or what!? They got off OK. Real lucky....
